Fit-to-Fly Certificate in Spain: How to Get One Fast
Need a fit-to-fly certificate before a flight from Spain? Here's what it is, when an airline requires it, and how a doctor can issue one the same day.
A fit-to-fly certificate is a short document signed by a doctor confirming you are medically able to fly. Airlines may ask for one after an illness, injury, late pregnancy or a recent medical procedure. In Spain you can get one from a licensed physician — including a doctor who comes to your accommodation — and it is usually issued the same day after a brief in-person assessment.
When does an airline require a fit-to-fly certificate?
Common triggers are: recent surgery, a fracture in a cast, late-stage pregnancy (often from around week 28), a contagious illness, or a recent hospital stay. Policies vary by airline — check yours, and ask how recent the certificate must be.
Who can issue a fit-to-fly certificate?
Any licensed physician can issue one after assessing you in person. You do not need to go to a hospital for a routine certificate — a doctor visiting your hotel or apartment can examine you and issue the document there. If you're unsure how to arrange a visit, see our guide on how to see a doctor as a tourist in Spain, or read about OnCall's fit-to-fly certificate service in Spain to book a licensed doctor to your accommodation.
How quickly can I get one before my flight?
Usually the same day. The doctor performs a short assessment relevant to your condition and the flight, then issues the signed certificate. Book a day or two before travel where possible, so there is time if the airline needs anything specific. For genuine emergencies before a flight, check our emergency numbers for Spain instead.
What should the certificate include?
Your name, the date, the doctor's identification and licence, a statement that you are fit to travel by air, and any conditions (for example, needing assistance). Keep it with your travel documents.
